Maybe I’m not finding the right news sources, but it seems opposition elites have more problems with the state of the nation than do Kazakh citizens.

Please excuse me for commenting in English. My written Russian is worse than a child’s (and my spoken Russian isn’t much better!).
I think you are, to a great extent, misinterpreting American motives. Similarly, we tend to misinterpret others’ quite often too. I am an unabashed supporter of promoting democracy, but certainly not in a dumb or ham-handed manner. In Kazakhstan’s case, there’s no reason to push change that people aren’t enthusiastic for. I don’t think the US government is interested in doing so and probably doesn’t appreciate shrill NGOs or the press doing so.
США умом не понять, и ярдом общим не измерить. У них особенная стать - в Штаты надо верить! :)
Dear Nathan, i believe that most of Americans do support promoting democracy not in “a dumb or ham-handed manner”, however, we all know what the actual motives of the official US are. Your Big Man has managed to be “smart” enough to obviously show the real intentions… hopefully, Kazakhstan will not have to face the “democracy” in either Georgian, Ukranian, or KG ways…
I believe that real intentions is simple: to control. As long as existing regime is “cooperative” no one would be bothered by “absence of democracy” in the KZ. And all the hype here is to make NAN more cooperative: democracy watch, Griffin case. Just to remind someone who is the Big Man.
And if it won’t help one way or another they will definitely try to “inject a fresh steam into the power”.
